Upon reflection, my child brain did its own form of censoring: what I didn't understand, I somewhat glossed over. I even knew what I could and couldn't ask the adults about: matters around sex were best left alone but other aspects of human relationships could lead to enlightening discussions.

Eight year olds understand more than they might be given credit for, ten year olds even more so. Kids do know that evil exists and bad things happen because they know that some classmates have rotten homes or are hungry. They live through the recess dynamics and see the struggle of someone with a learning disability. They will know clearly who is a Malfoy and who is a Hermione.

So I'm of the "let 'em read the whole series if they want to" group. In addition to wonderful metaphors which can speak to a child's experience of the world, there is that rock solid tenet in every book that we are about the choices we make, so you had better make good ones--delivered in a more palatable form than a kitchen table lecture.Tiffinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13778085151055551720noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2132508586863374023.post-23743570163859038202012-06-07T09:20:43.729-04:002012-06-07T09:20:43.729-04:00Here now, I think calling the epilogue "silly...Here now, I think calling the epilogue "silly" goes a bit too far. Never seem to be in the mood?

M and I were just debating the merits/deficits of the HP7 epilogue the other day.
